I’ve heard a few people say that, sure, we’re going to Austria, but most Europeans speak English anyway. There have been many times in Germany when people I’ve spoken to have switched to English upon hearing my accent. However, since arriving in Linz, only one person has done that; it was a woman today at an electronics store. I’m not sure English is quite as widespread in Linz as it is in larger cities or in cities in Germany. Maybe people understand English or could speak it if they had to, but they don’t seem to want to. In fact, the woman we turned our registration papers into asked if it was alright to speak in German because her English was not good. Could be a great opportunity to use some German.
