Last Saturday we went to Woodland Park Zoo. Unfortunately, we didn’t take any pictures there, which is kind of unusual for us. I’m not sure why we didn’t take any pictures. I’m consoling myself with the thought that most of our dear readers have been to a zoo, so they don’t need pictures of one. Plus, we have tons of zoo pictures on the blog from that zoo in Vienna in the winter and in the spring. I must admit the zoo in Vienna was cooler, but Woodland Park Zoo is also nice, especially considering it’s well within walking distance of our apartment.
We checked out a nearby garden before going into the zoo. They have a “sensory garden” hidden way behind the main part. Here you find herbs and plants that you’re allowed to touch, smell, and taste. There are little signs telling you the names of the plants and what to do with each one. My favorites were the lamb’s ear and the rosemary.
The zoo itself was a zoo. I particularly liked the brown bear and the hippo. I had never seen a Komodo dragon before; Will liked him too. They had a few gorillas. Seeing gorillas in zoos makes me a bit sad because they’re so human-like. Is it crazy to think that they deserve basic human rights? I mean not the right to vote or anything but just to be free from harm and have their interests taken into account. One of them seemed to delight in entertaining the crowd by serenely barfing into her hand and then leisurely eating it, but again, very human-like.
They had way too many snakes along with one legless lizard. There was a difference but I don’t quite remember what it was; I think it was eyelids. They had a king cobra, the largest venomous snake in the world. They’re the ones with the hoods that kind of partially stand up straight. Also very freaky was this gigantic spider in a web with no glass around it at all. They just trust the spider to hang out in the web I guess.
That’s really all I have to say about the zoo. I’ll ask Will later if he’d like to add something. We didn’t do much else that day because the next day we had plans to go to the Space Needle and to the Aquarium.
Regurgitation: Now that’s a party trick!
A picture of the free-to-roam spider would have been neat to see.
I do regret not taking a picture of the spider.
