Just got back from the first class. It went well; the students were friendly and not unwilling to speak. My presentation went over pretty well.
One interesting thing is that because this is a teacher-training college, the English courses focus not just on improving the English of the teachers in training but also on teaching them how to teach English. It’s actually very helpful for me, because I’m learning more strategies for teaching language along with them, while I help them with their English. Before, I complained a bit that I didn’t get placed in a secondary school, but now I think this could be even more useful for me than I thought.
On the way back, a man stopped me to ask how to get to the cemetery. I didn’t even know there was a cemetery near there, so I told him I didn’t know and that I was sorry. He heard my accent and said, “ah, yes” in a knowing way. If I had known where it was, I could have told him.
