We use the train a lot to get around Austria and into Germany. Most trains run about 140-160 kph. That’s about 87mph to 100mph. We were on a train the other day coming back from Munich that managed to get up to 195kph. That’s a whopping 121mph.

That sounds fast, but there are faster trains. Certain trains in Europe that are on new rail can get up to 160mph. One maglev train in China reaches 268mph. The world speed record is held by a Japanese test train that managed to hit 362mph.

Now that’s impressive.

What would be impressive would be what happened to a baked potato that was casually lobbed at the train’s front window while it was going its record speed.

How long does it take to get that fast? 0 to 100 in 5 secs? How far do you usually travel on the train? Or even the average rider, Is it a long ways between places over there? Just wondering…..

  • They don’t really shoot off. Most stations are in cities where then run slower anyway. I’d say you’re totally up to speed in 5 minutes maybe.

We have been doing trips that take about 1:30. Our ride from Frankfurt to Linz when we got here was about 5 hours, and we’ll be doing a big 8 hour push when we go to Berlin in February.

I guess I’m not sure what an average ride is. You can cross the country by train in 3 hours or so, so maybe 1:30 is the average for most people?
